Best Springtime Biking Spots in NYC!

Spring is a magical time in New York City. Layers are getting lighter, flowers are blooming, and New Yorkers are coming out of their cozy hibernation in their 400 square foot apartments! Truly a lovely sight.

The best part about the weather getting warmer is the ability to explore the many beautiful parts of the city forgotten momentarily during the brutal winter. And what better way to quickly travel from borough to borough in this gorgeous weather? Biking, of course!

The possibilities are endless. In Central Park alone, our bike tour covers over 30 attractions! These must-see locations are certainly not limited to this list, but here are a few of our favorite spring destinations to see on bike in NYC.

Cherry Hill – Central Park

At the top of our list is Cherry Hill located in the southern region of Central Park. Cherry Hill is a beautiful picnic and lounge spot year-round, but people flock to see the freshly bloomed cherry blossoms in the Springtime. Just make sure to take your allergy medicine because the pollen is nothing to mess with!

Shakespeare Garden – Central Park

Another Central Park must-see in the Springtime is the Shakespeare Garden, tucked away in the south-central region of the park, not too far from Cherry Hill. We highly recommend visiting Shakespeare Garden this season while the flowers are in full bloom!

Hudson River Greenway

Whoever you may ask about where to bike in the city, Hudson River greenway is always at the top of the list. With two designated bike lanes, you can enjoy a leisurely ride along the water, enjoying an unbelievable Springtime view of the waters and city landscape.

South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is a must-visit destination in the Springtime. With the cool breeze coming from the waters, the bustling energy from the boardwalk markets and a gorgeous view of the Brooklyn Bridge, you do not want to miss out on this location.

Brooklyn Bridge

You can tell we are really into scenic waterfront rides, but reasonably so! Brooklyn Bridge is a great biking destination for both tourists and residents. Crossing over to the Brooklyn side of the Bridge leads you to DUMBO, a fun and trendy neighborhood with lots to see and do including Springtime art galleries, food festivals, and a gorgeous view of Manhattan across the water.

How to Burn More Calories While Biking

Summer is around the corner and suddenly, binge watching Friends on Netflix and scarfing down family-sized bags of Doritos in a single serving doesn’t seem as good of an idea as it did in the cold months of Winter. Well, have no fear because we have the perfect solution to help cut out some of those extra calories without the dread of actually going to the gym. Although we do love our Doritos (and let’s be real, Nacho Cheese is the best flavor), taking care of our health goes beyond physical appearance. Exercising regularly strengthens the cardiovascular system, speeds up metabolism, and greatly reduces the risk of developing certain types of diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

So, you’re probably thinking, what is this “magic” solution you guys are trying to propose here? It definitely isn’t magic, but bike riding is fun, affordable, and accessible to all ages!

That’s right! What if I told you that burning hundreds of calories could be fun and exciting? And could be done practically anywhere! Central Park? It’s gorgeous in the summertime. Brooklyn Bridge? Absolutely. That creepy, abandoned playground in your neighborhood? Sure, why not!

The key to burning the most calories while bike riding is to switch up the intensity throughout your workout. High-intensity interval training has been proven to maximize your calorie burn in a shorter amount of time. So, try alternating between your comfortable riding speed to a faster, more challenging speed in order to get your heart rate up and down. For example, say your average riding speed is about 12 mph. In a high-intensity interval bike ride, you would ride at 12 mph for one minute and then raise the intensity to 15 mph for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, drop your speed back to 12 mph for another minute and repeat for 5-10 minutes. You can track your speed using a portable speedometer or download one of the many apps available on your phone! As you build your endurance, gradually increase the intensity of your training, as well.

Another way to burn more calories when outdoor biking is by incorporating inclines in your ride. Rather than only riding on a flat terrain, challenge yourself with some steep, uphill inclines in order to raise that heart rate and burn more calories. Riding uphill can be a bit of a challenge for some, so we recommend starting off by conditioning yourself with smaller hills and working your way up to the mountains! You would be surprised how quickly your body can adapt to the training!

Outdoor cycling is a great workout, overall, to burn calories, lose weight, and even build muscle in your lower body. The best part of outdoor cycling is being able to sightsee the world around you as you ride along. The adventure in the ride almost makes you forget that you’re actually exercising!

Not sure if biking is right for you? Here at Unlimited Biking, we have countless locations where you can rent Cannondale bikes, one of the best names in the bike industry, for a short ride to see if outdoor biking is a right fit.

So don’t hesitate! Visit our website and try it out today. You never know, you might just be the next Lance Armstrong

Improve your bike safety! Ride with Unlimited Biking!?

Cycling remains a dangerous sport if you do not take the necessary safety measures. Several kilometres of bicycle paths have been built to improve cyclists safety in major cities and in the countryside. However, there are not always cycle paths. And cyclists are not always well equipped. That is why all cyclists must be equipped in the best possible way to be able to ride without fear of an accident.

Good equipment is still essential:

  1. Wear a helmet as soon as you ride your bike! In the event of a fall, the helmet can save your life! The skull is very sensitive and can be damaged in an accident or a fall. The skull must therefore be more than just protected.
  2. Ride with your bike lock and lock your bike in a fixed place. (attach the bike lock to the frame).
  3. Avoid carrying a bag on your back while cycling. The backpack can destabilize you and make you fall. It is therefore important to have a small bicycle bag or basket directly attached to your bike.
  4. Equip your bike with a bell or an alert system to warn other vehicles or pedestrians.
  5. Check that the bike is well equipped with lights and/or reflectors when you are cycling at night. Always be visible!
  6. Choose a superior quality bike! Check tires, brakes, bicycle chain, gears and suspensions. Check that the mechanics of your bike are in good condition.

It is very important to ensure that all this equipment is working properly before starting to drive.

Some bicycle safety rules to be respected:

  • Respect signs and traffic lights,
  • Give way to pedestrians, vehicles and other cyclists at an intersection,
  • Do not drive on the highway,
  • Do not drive with headphones or a phone in your hand,
  • Stay in control of your vehicle,
  • Do not drive between two rows of moving vehicles,
  • Use the bicycle paths,
  • Keep a certain distance from other vehicles, especially in rainy weather,
  • Signal your intention to change lanes and only do so when the manoeuvre is possible,
  • Always be visible to cyclists, motorists and especially bus and truck drivers,
  • Brake gradually and not suddenly to avoid a collision,

Always keep in mind:

  • Be careful and careful, regardless of weather conditions. Be careful with vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, animals, etc….
  • Feel free to look behind you and look to the sides before changing lanes,
  • Be predictable and try to anticipate the next actions of other vehicles,
  • Be as visible as possible,
  • Do not drive on sidewalks,
  • Do not drive near parked cars and sidewalks,
  • Take breaks during your travels,
  • Drink a lot of water when you do an intense sporting activity,
  • Make sure you are covered by your insurance,
  • Be courteous and kind,
  • Always have an emergency number and the police number with you at all times.
  • Stay focused and obey the traffic regulations.

Biking for your health: 8 reasons why you should definitely take a ride with Unlimited Biking

Everybody knows biking is great fun, but did you know it is also very good for your health? We would like to present you eight healthy facts about biking. So let’s start.

1. It is a very good training for your heart
If you ride at moderate speed five times a week for at least 30 minutes, your heart will be relieved and your blood circulation will increase. In the long run not only the blood pressure, but also the risk of vasoconstriction decreases. This reduces the risk of heart attack by up to 50 percent, according to the “World Health Organization” (WHO).
The heart muscle also benefits: In the medium to long term, it can become more efficient and can pump more blood through the body. The heart works more efficiently overall.

2. Strengthens the lungs
Whoever pedaling fills the lungs evenly with oxygen and strengthens his respiratory muscles. The regular exercise in the fresh air promotes the immune system, thus protecting against infections.

3. Strengthens the back
Common cause of back pain: lack of exercise and inappropriate stress on the back muscles. Cycling works gently. The rhythmic pedaling promotes the metabolism of the disc, the muscle structure stabilizes the spine, especially in the lumbar region. This relieves tension early.

4. Activates happiness hormones
After 30 to 40 minutes of endurance sports such as cycling, the body releases endorphins and serotonin – quite naturally. Against the happiness hormones negative thoughts have no chance, they also make us more resistant to stress. Studies also showed that patients could reduce anxiety and depression when they exercising regularly.

5. Builds Musculature
From age 30, the muscles shrink – about one pound of muscle mass turns into fat per year due to age. Regular cycling stops this development. The good thing: It trains almost all of the body’s musculature – the leg muscles, the core muscles of the abdomen and back (which also absorbs shocks) and the shoulder-arm muscles.

6. Protects the joints
Sitting – during the work and even at home. Exercise is often too short and this is bad for the joints. Cycling is the ideal balance. The circular, regular leg movement optimally supplies the articular cartilage to the knee and hip with oxygen, thereby also protecting against osteoarthritis. And because the saddle carries 70 to 80 percent of the body weight, biking costs the knee joints significantly less than jogging.

7. Train the coordination
Whether sudden evasive maneuvers, changing speeds or slippery roads – again and again there are new situations in Central Park, to which we have to respond correctly and quickly. The sense of balance also benefits.

8. Choose Unlimited Biking
We from Unlimited Biking have everything you need for a healthy bike tour full of fun. Why should you choose us?

A bike tour through the Central Park during the fall

It’s getting colder here in Big Apple. A warm jacket, a cup of tea or coffee and gloves are a Must-Have for these days. But with the cold comes also the beautiful fall. The different colors of the leaves and the fresh cold air. Worth seeing!

What should you definitely do during the fall? I really recommend the Central Park during the fall or even better, I recommend a bike tour through the Central Park during this beautiful season. With the bike you can see the hole beauty of the Park.

The weather is really good these days. The sun is shining and the temperatures aren’t that cold. And it’s also really calm in the big Central Park area. The streets are almost empty and one can concentrate on the different sights and the insane colorful landscape.

On the picture above you can see my favorite spot here in the Central Park – the Harlem Meer. I really love the Central Park area in Harlem. It is so peaceful and there are usually only a few people walking with their dogs or enjoying the sun on a park bench. And the best thing is that you can get there really quickly by bike.

Cleopatra’s Needle is another popular sight and the name for each of three Ancient Egyptian obelisks re-erected in London, Paris and in New York City during the nineteenth century. The New York City needle was erected in Central Park on 22 February 1881. It was a gift from the Khedive for the United States remaining a friendly neutral as the European powers – France and Britain – maneuvered to secure political control of the Egyptian Government. You should know there is a interesting story behind every sight in Central Park.

At the end of my bike tour I actually had to take off my sweater, because of the warm weather and also because of my bike route. You shouldn’t underestimate the distance. It’s an up and down all the time. But with all the sights and the awesome spots one completely forget the distance. Here you can see the Rock with a view. And it’s really true – the view is gorgeous with all the high rise buildings and the lake.

At the end of my bike route I really can say that:

I FALL in love with Central Park!

Fall in Love with New York City on a Bike

Whenever people fall in love with New York, it’s always for its diversity and vibrancy. There’s a reason why they call it the City That Never Sleeps. With new sights and attractions to see, the relentless pace alone is a rush like no other. If the thought of these endless possibilities puts you in a tailspin, then look no further – our bike rentals are the answer. There’s no better way to see New York City than by going on a bike ride through Manhattan – whether on a guided or self-guided tour!

Why grab a bike? Here are a number of great reasons:

It’s good for you

Women’s Health says cycling is one of the best cardio workouts out there, with plenty of cycling clubs popping up all over the country. So you don’t just get toned thighs and calves, you also have the opportunity to get together with like-minded people and have fun while getting healthy. It’s now a social activity, one you could share with your friends via a weekly or monthly bike ride to catch up while doing something great for your health.

It’s easier on you

Unlike other forms of exercises that could be hard on your knees, cycling gets your heart pumping and your legs moving all without putting too much stress on your joints. Running, for instance, takes a toll on your body. That’s why you get aches and sore muscles. Biking, though, is far less damaging. It’s a lower impact activity that keeps your muscles engaged so you won’t have to feel like you’re coming down with an injury.

It’s a great way to explore

A bike rental in the Hudson River area is just a great way to see New York. If you like to go sightseeing but don’t want to head over to the usual jaunts, this is a relaxing way to take in the city in a refreshing way. Embrace the rush of city-life from above by biking to the High Line to overlook the streets, head down to Chelsea Market and sample the delectable foods from fabulous shops, or be adventurous and head next door with your bike to hop on the ferry to New Jersey. Even with a bike, the exploratory possibilities are endless.

It’s fun

You could grab a bike and go at it on your own. Take your time, go at your own pace and stop wherever you see fit. Or join a group of friends and pick up bike rentals to travel along the Hudson River Greenway. That way, you’ll have a bike path to guide you along the waterfront and friends to talk to along the way.

It’s family friendly

You could bring along the kids for a bike ride, too! It’s a great way to give them a taste of adventure and make them feel like they’re flying down the street. It’s a fond memory they’re sure to keep coming back to time and time again, especially if you make a stop at the nearby Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, Discovery Times Square on 44th Street, or even bike down to Chelsea Piers for some rock-climbing, batting cages and bowling.

Just take the initiative to get on a bike and see where you end up. For rentals, contact us by phone at Hudson River Sightseeing Bike Rental, or www.HudsonRiverSightseeing.com.
