San Francisco: Tips to cycle in San Fran

San Francisco is home to a little bit of everything. Whether you’re a first time visitor or a long-time local, San Francisco’s Golden Gates welcome all. The best way to see San Francisco’s best side is to use a bike. Truly. With the huge bike culture and bike lances criss-crossing every neighborhood, it’s by far the greatest and most fun way to commute. And now you get all the tips you should know before biking in SF.

First of all you should definitely know the rules on the road. Stop at stop signs and lights, yield to pedestrians, front and rear lights required at night, sidewalks are for pedestrians and kids on bikes and you can ride in the middle of a lane if you need to.

A good lock is everything. If you’d like to discover SF with your bike you really need a good bike lock, because bike theft is prevalent in SF. Cut down your chances by getting a solid U-lock. And don’t forget: Always lock your bike to the frame, not to the wheel. Nothing worse than seeing a well-locked wheel sitting frameless on the sidewalk.

Be Mindful. Locals love that visitor appreciate the City by the Bay and all its various delights. But local cyclists, don’t love the fact that tourists on the bikes are often guilty of stopping in the bike lanes to snap photos. Especially around popular spots like the Golden Gate Bridge. So always remember to pull aside and stay right if you’re on a sightseeing ride and want to take pictures. Don’t stop too abrupt.

Let’s talk about public transport. All riders can bring their bikes on the MUNI buses, BART subway trains and Caltrains. Bikes are not allowed on the MUNI Light Rail, the historic streetcars or the cable cars.

The helmet discussion. Based on the slogan “helmet hair, don’t care!” you should always wear a helmet. While California laws mandate that only people under 18 must wear a helmet at all times, it is highly recommended that every rider does.

Now you know all the tips. And with a little pre-ride planning and attention to basic rules, cycling in San Francisco can be the best way to explore this beautiful city with its iconic spots!

Thanksgiving in New York City

It’s time for Thanksgiving in New York. Every fourth Thursday of November all people come together and celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved ones. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by George Washington after a request by Congress. Thomas Jefferson chose not to observe the holiday and its celebration was intermittent until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall and winter holiday season in the U.S.

And when it’s Thanksgiving it also means that everybody is freaking out about Macy’s Christmas Parade. This year is the 92nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 22, 2018. It starts at 9am and ends at 12 noon. The parade is one of America’s favorite holiday events and a New York City tradition since 1924. The Parade combines a huge collection of performers, participants, and of course, the famous big balloons that are the signature of this event in New York City. Past years have seen around 3.5 million in attendance to see the more than 1,500 dancers and cheerleaders, 1,000s of clowns and 30+ parade floats, a dozen marching bands, and nearly 8000 participants in all.

Santa comes to town as the finale of the parade and now its time to spread holiday cheer, spread good tidings and be merry. During this season in the city there is so much to see and do. Lights twinkle and sparkle in the distance, snowflakes fall from the sky, horses travel about with carriages in tow, and everything is a magical holiday wonderland.

Improve your bike safety! Ride with Unlimited Biking!?

Cycling remains a dangerous sport if you do not take the necessary safety measures. Several kilometres of bicycle paths have been built to improve cyclists safety in major cities and in the countryside. However, there are not always cycle paths. And cyclists are not always well equipped. That is why all cyclists must be equipped in the best possible way to be able to ride without fear of an accident.

Good equipment is still essential:

  1. Wear a helmet as soon as you ride your bike! In the event of a fall, the helmet can save your life! The skull is very sensitive and can be damaged in an accident or a fall. The skull must therefore be more than just protected.
  2. Ride with your bike lock and lock your bike in a fixed place. (attach the bike lock to the frame).
  3. Avoid carrying a bag on your back while cycling. The backpack can destabilize you and make you fall. It is therefore important to have a small bicycle bag or basket directly attached to your bike.
  4. Equip your bike with a bell or an alert system to warn other vehicles or pedestrians.
  5. Check that the bike is well equipped with lights and/or reflectors when you are cycling at night. Always be visible!
  6. Choose a superior quality bike! Check tires, brakes, bicycle chain, gears and suspensions. Check that the mechanics of your bike are in good condition.

It is very important to ensure that all this equipment is working properly before starting to drive.

Some bicycle safety rules to be respected:

  • Respect signs and traffic lights,
  • Give way to pedestrians, vehicles and other cyclists at an intersection,
  • Do not drive on the highway,
  • Do not drive with headphones or a phone in your hand,
  • Stay in control of your vehicle,
  • Do not drive between two rows of moving vehicles,
  • Use the bicycle paths,
  • Keep a certain distance from other vehicles, especially in rainy weather,
  • Signal your intention to change lanes and only do so when the manoeuvre is possible,
  • Always be visible to cyclists, motorists and especially bus and truck drivers,
  • Brake gradually and not suddenly to avoid a collision,

Always keep in mind:

  • Be careful and careful, regardless of weather conditions. Be careful with vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, animals, etc….
  • Feel free to look behind you and look to the sides before changing lanes,
  • Be predictable and try to anticipate the next actions of other vehicles,
  • Be as visible as possible,
  • Do not drive on sidewalks,
  • Do not drive near parked cars and sidewalks,
  • Take breaks during your travels,
  • Drink a lot of water when you do an intense sporting activity,
  • Make sure you are covered by your insurance,
  • Be courteous and kind,
  • Always have an emergency number and the police number with you at all times.
  • Stay focused and obey the traffic regulations.

Biking for your health: 8 reasons why you should definitely take a ride with Unlimited Biking

Everybody knows biking is great fun, but did you know it is also very good for your health? We would like to present you eight healthy facts about biking. So let’s start.

1. It is a very good training for your heart
If you ride at moderate speed five times a week for at least 30 minutes, your heart will be relieved and your blood circulation will increase. In the long run not only the blood pressure, but also the risk of vasoconstriction decreases. This reduces the risk of heart attack by up to 50 percent, according to the “World Health Organization” (WHO).
The heart muscle also benefits: In the medium to long term, it can become more efficient and can pump more blood through the body. The heart works more efficiently overall.

2. Strengthens the lungs
Whoever pedaling fills the lungs evenly with oxygen and strengthens his respiratory muscles. The regular exercise in the fresh air promotes the immune system, thus protecting against infections.

3. Strengthens the back
Common cause of back pain: lack of exercise and inappropriate stress on the back muscles. Cycling works gently. The rhythmic pedaling promotes the metabolism of the disc, the muscle structure stabilizes the spine, especially in the lumbar region. This relieves tension early.

4. Activates happiness hormones
After 30 to 40 minutes of endurance sports such as cycling, the body releases endorphins and serotonin – quite naturally. Against the happiness hormones negative thoughts have no chance, they also make us more resistant to stress. Studies also showed that patients could reduce anxiety and depression when they exercising regularly.

5. Builds Musculature
From age 30, the muscles shrink – about one pound of muscle mass turns into fat per year due to age. Regular cycling stops this development. The good thing: It trains almost all of the body’s musculature – the leg muscles, the core muscles of the abdomen and back (which also absorbs shocks) and the shoulder-arm muscles.

6. Protects the joints
Sitting – during the work and even at home. Exercise is often too short and this is bad for the joints. Cycling is the ideal balance. The circular, regular leg movement optimally supplies the articular cartilage to the knee and hip with oxygen, thereby also protecting against osteoarthritis. And because the saddle carries 70 to 80 percent of the body weight, biking costs the knee joints significantly less than jogging.

7. Train the coordination
Whether sudden evasive maneuvers, changing speeds or slippery roads – again and again there are new situations in Central Park, to which we have to respond correctly and quickly. The sense of balance also benefits.

8. Choose Unlimited Biking
We from Unlimited Biking have everything you need for a healthy bike tour full of fun. Why should you choose us?
