This is not at all to say winters in Central Park are dull. Still at the core of the Big Apple, the city’s signature buzz doesn’t end at the park’s borders.   • Visit the Central Park Zoo. The winter sees reduced fares, and is the liveliest time for the sea lions, seals, and snow leopards. You can feed a penguin or head to the children’s zoo to see the only cow in Manhattan. The nearby Delacorte Clock plays holiday carols and features bronze statues of animals playing instruments
  • Go rock climbing. While scaling the boulders in the North Woods or Rat Rock near the park’s southern entrance, you’ll forget you’re in the middle of a big city and feel like you’re in an arctic tundra
  • Visit the Arthur Ross Pinetum, a four-acre arboretum with 17 varieties of winter trees, designed for New Yorkers of the 1800s to feel like they entered the center of an evergreen forest
  • Go cross-country skiing with skyline views. The most popular areas are the bridal path, Great Lawn, and Sheep Meadow. Skiis can be rented nearby at sporting goods stores such as REI and Paragon

  • Build a snowman. Build a whole snow family. Make snow angels. New Yorkers, especially on Sheep Meadow and the Great Lawn tend to get creative with their snow creations

Like any public park during any season of the year, fun and relaxation are the main priorities for its visitors. Central Park is no different. How to Burn More Calories While Biking

Summer is around the corner and suddenly, binge watching Friends on Netflix and scarfing down family-sized bags of Doritos in a single serving doesn’t seem as good of an idea as it did in the cold months of Winter. Well, have no fear because we have the perfect solution to help cut out some of those extra calories without the dread of actually going to the gym. Although we do love our Doritos (and let’s be real, Nacho Cheese is the best flavor), taking care of our health goes beyond physical appearance. Exercising regularly strengthens the cardiovascular system, speeds up metabolism, and greatly reduces the risk of developing certain types of diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

So, you’re probably thinking, what is this “magic” solution you guys are trying to propose here? It definitely isn’t magic, but bike riding is fun, affordable, and accessible to all ages!

That’s right! What if I told you that burning hundreds of calories could be fun and exciting? And could be done practically anywhere! Central Park? It’s gorgeous in the summertime. Brooklyn Bridge? Absolutely. That creepy, abandoned playground in your neighborhood? Sure, why not!

The key to burning the most calories while bike riding is to switch up the intensity throughout your workout. High-intensity interval training has been proven to maximize your calorie burn in a shorter amount of time. So, try alternating between your comfortable riding speed to a faster, more challenging speed in order to get your heart rate up and down. For example, say your average riding speed is about 12 mph. In a high-intensity interval bike ride, you would ride at 12 mph for one minute and then raise the intensity to 15 mph for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, drop your speed back to 12 mph for another minute and repeat for 5-10 minutes. You can track your speed using a portable speedometer or download one of the many apps available on your phone! As you build your endurance, gradually increase the intensity of your training, as well.

Another way to burn more calories when outdoor biking is by incorporating inclines in your ride. Rather than only riding on a flat terrain, challenge yourself with some steep, uphill inclines in order to raise that heart rate and burn more calories. Riding uphill can be a bit of a challenge for some, so we recommend starting off by conditioning yourself with smaller hills and working your way up to the mountains! You would be surprised how quickly your body can adapt to the training!

Outdoor cycling is a great workout, overall, to burn calories, lose weight, and even build muscle in your lower body. The best part of outdoor cycling is being able to sightsee the world around you as you ride along. The adventure in the ride almost makes you forget that you’re actually exercising!

Training Program for Competition

Train at least a week before your competition! During this week you will prepare for your competition. Keep your goal in mind and continue your efforts until D-Day!

Training to be done during the week of preparation! (Train for about 100 miles)

  • Saturday: 120 min flat terrain (40 miles – Difficulty = Normal)
  • Sunday: Rest & Relax (Yoga or meditation)
  • Monday: 45 min steep terrain (20 miles – Difficulty = Hard)
  • Tuesday: Rest & Relax (Yoga or meditation)
  • Wednesday: 90 min flat terrain (30 miles – Difficulty = Hard)
  • Thursday: 30 min steep terrain (20 miles – Difficulty = Hard) / Rest & Relax (Yoga or meditation)
  • Friday: 30 min Intensive with several phases of acceleration throughout your session (20 miles – Difficulty = Hard) / Rest & Relax (Yoga or meditation) in the evening

During the week, sleep well, eat and drink a lot!

Remember that to be in shape during your training week but also for your competition you must make sure to feed yourself well and relax your mind. Diet and stress can play a big part in your success or failure.

Always eat fresh, carbohydrate snack, or high protein foods that also contain good minerals and vitamins. You can eat small portions throughout the day. During your training do not forget your bar and energy drinks.

Remember to always leave about 2 hours between your meals and exercises to have a good digestion and be in good shape on your bike.

Before the competition, stay focused and do not lose your goal! The mind also plays on your success! Stay positive and never give up!

After the race, think about feeding yourself and drinking a lot, stress and intense effort can make you lose more pounds.

The Mall and Literary Walk is the largest walkway and right-hand driveway in the park with its century-old trees. Just a quick note, the metal plates on the ground and on the benches cost $10k. This donation is then used for the renovation and proper maintenance of the park.

Bethesda Fountain and Terrace, the arcades under the terrace were under renovation for 14 years, the ceiling is completely renovated and inspired by the Alhambra in southern Spain in Andalusia. The angel in the centre of the fountain honours the water that falls from the sky and which at the time provided the city with water.

Cleopatra’s Needle, the 21m high Egyptian obelisk created under the reign of Thutmes 3, contains in its base documents of importance to the American people: Bible, amendments and a secret chest. The obelisk also has a twin in London.

Thanksgiving in New York City

It’s time for Thanksgiving in New York. Every fourth Thursday of November all people come together and celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved ones. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by George Washington after a request by Congress. Thomas Jefferson chose not to observe the holiday and its celebration was intermittent until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall and winter holiday season in the U.S.

And when it’s Thanksgiving it also means that everybody is freaking out about Macy’s Christmas Parade. This year is the 92nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 22, 2018. It starts at 9am and ends at 12 noon. The parade is one of America’s favorite holiday events and a New York City tradition since 1924. The Parade combines a huge collection of performers, participants, and of course, the famous big balloons that are the signature of this event in New York City. Past years have seen around 3.5 million in attendance to see the more than 1,500 dancers and cheerleaders, 1,000s of clowns and 30+ parade floats, a dozen marching bands, and nearly 8000 participants in all.

Santa comes to town as the finale of the parade and now its time to spread holiday cheer, spread good tidings and be merry. During this season in the city there is so much to see and do. Lights twinkle and sparkle in the distance, snowflakes fall from the sky, horses travel about with carriages in tow, and everything is a magical holiday wonderland.
