Burning Man is not your typical festival: it’s a temporary city built in the Nevada desert, where radical self-expression, self-reliance, and community come together in one of the most transformative environments on Earth! But that transformation doesn’t come easily. The conditions on the Playa are harsh: fierce sun, dust storms, and extreme temperatures. Preparation is essential!
If you’re heading to Black Rock City for Burning Man Festival, August 24 – September 1, 2025, here’s your ultimate Burning Man checklist, crafted to make sure you arrive ready for anything the desert throws your way. And yes, that includes your most important piece of transportation: a bike and that’s where Unlimited Biking has you covered.
Mindset: Pack It First
Before costumes, goggles, or glitter. It all starts with mindset.
Burning Man isn’t something you simply attend. It’s something you participate in. Think of it as a week-long co-creation, not a spectator event. Flexibility, openness, and patience are your most valuable tools out there.
There will be dust storms. Things will break. Plans will change. You might get lost. You might find yourself. Either way, the people who thrive are those who come prepared to give, help, adapt, and be fully present.
Pro tip: Let go of your expectations and lean into the unknown. That’s where the real magic is.

Shelter & Sleep: Your Oasis in the Storm
When the wind picks up and the Playa becomes a white blur, your shelter is your sanctuary.
Bring a sturdy tent or shade structure that can withstand 50+ mph winds. Rebar stakes or lag bolts are a must, regular tent pegs won’t hold in the desert floor. Add a tarp underneath to keep dust out and reflect heat.
At night, temps can drop drastically. A warm sleeping bag, layers, and even a hot water bottle can turn an uncomfortable night into cozy recovery.
Want bonus sleep? Bring earplugs and an eye mask. Black Rock City doesn’t sleep, but you should.
Food & Drink: Fuel for the Soul (and Survival)
You’re not glamping. You’re in the desert. And Black Rock City doesn’t come with a grocery store.
Bring food that is:
- Easy to prepare (especially in high winds or heat).
- High in protein and calories.
- Non-perishable and MOOP-free (MOOP = Matter Out of Place)
Think: jerky, trail mix, canned meals, fresh fruit that lasts (like apples), and instant coffee or electrolyte packets.
Water is critical. You’ll need at least 1.5 gallons per person per day for drinking, washing, and cooking. A hydration pack is a game-changer for staying fueled while exploring art installations across the Playa.
Hygiene & Health: Stay Clean, Stay Happy
Showers are a luxury out here, but cleanliness is still key to staying comfortable and healthy.
Essentials include:
- Baby wipes (your best friend)
- Hand sanitizer
- Biodegradable soap for body and dishes
- Sunscreen and lip balm (with SPF)
- First aid kit, think blisters, sunburn, dehydration, and scrapes
Also: Playa dust is alkaline, meaning it dries and cracks your skin. A spray bottle with vinegar and water can help neutralize its effects on your hands and feet. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Must-Have Gear: Don’t Overpack. Pack Smart.
While everyone’s packing list is different, some gear makes all the difference.
Our favorites:
- Headlamp (with extra batteries) for nighttime rides and camp life.
- Multi-tool or Leatherman: a Burner’s best friend.
- Duct tape & zip ties: fix a costume, camp gear, or even your bike basket.
- Solar charger: outlets are rare, and you’ll want to keep your lights going.
Bonus Tip: Your Bike Is Everything
At Burning Man, your bike is more than transportation, it’s freedom!
You’ll use it to:
- Explore giant art installations at sunrise.
- Make your way to a theme camp on the other side of the city..
- Cruise to the Temple in silence.
- Ride through sound camps under the stars.
Unlimited Biking provides Playa-ready bike rentals at the event without the hassle of buying, shipping, or fixing a bike. The bikes come with lights, a lock, and a helmet, so you don’t have to bring these yourself! Let us take care of your ride so you can focus on your experience.
